Prototype companies specialize in manufacturing small quantities of boards. Most of these company are not fully automated. Meaning that there are a lot of the process done by hand. This can actually can be a real benefit when you need a special board built, that may be on the fine edge of the normal manufacturing capabilities.

Production shops are normal fully automated and capable of producing very large quantities of circuit boards. The costs of mass produced boards are general less expensive as most of the cost is in the front end setup and tooling.
